The LORD is my light and my salvation; Whom shall I fear? The LORD is the strength of my life; Of whom shall I be afraid? Ps 27:1

Weird?!?! Really?!?! Are You Weird?

Recently as I watched my husband enjoy a "treat" of soda crackers and butter, it made me begin to think and remember some things that I had nearly forgotten about. Having no interest in soda crackers unless I put them to use in a corn casserole or in some kind of patty/burger, it is hard for me to imagine how he can desire them so often in soup or with cheese or butter. I can remember that often my mother would add them to my lunch pail menu for my school lunch. I am sure that it was one of the things that was pretty cheap back then with her limited food money and she probably thought it a treat for me. On the other hand, I did not think it a treat!  Nor do I understand why anyone would want them.

This so-called treat made me remember another "treat" that my father enjoyed. And once again, I did not understand why it was such a favorite for him. Growing up long ago was definitely a time of "not having!" We seldom had dessert with our meals and considered fresh fruits or canned fruit sauce our end to most meals. But every once in a while, my father took a large slice of whole wheat homemade bread and laid it in his dinner plate. I say it because he liked to use a plate for his meals that had a rim around it to prevent his food from sliding off his plate. Having laid the slice of bread in his plate, then he added cold milk to soak the bread until it could hold no more milk and was overflowing with milk, all contained in his plate with its rim. Next came his pièces de résistance--the showpiece of the dessert for his meal. He liberally drizzled sorghum (a cousin to molasses) all over the milk-soaked slice of bread. I know that I tried it and did not enjoy it nearly as much as he did. But it was one of his very favorite things.

The other day I was informed that peas went into a goulash casserole dish. Once again, I can't imagine why anyone would want to put peas in a dish of pasta, burger, onions and tomatoes. That is just weird. I can only say WHY? Google gave me another list of things some people enjoy pairing together.

Butter and Sugar Sandwiches.
Vanilla Ice Cream and Soy Sauce.
Melted Chocolate on a Cheese Pizza.
Olive Oil and Ice Cream.
Honey and Pizza.
Oreos Dipped in Orange Juice.
Nutella and Salted Chips
Butter and Sugar Sandwiches
Banana on Pizza
Banana Grilled Cheese
Oreos and Doritos
Banana and Mayonnaise Sandwich
Beef Burger and Peanut Butter
Cinnamon Roll Hamburger Bun

My opinion is that some surely have strange tastes. If you are feeling adventurous, maybe you will want to try some of these combinations and see for yourself. But count me out on being adventurous!! We have a relative that used to eat his peas with his table knife. Again, I find that strangely weird and wonder why he did it that way when a spoon would have been so much easier to get peas to your mouth.

Of course, I don't have any strange enjoyable things or habits. Of course not! No me! I do like to sleep with the room cool but when winter comes then I like to sleep like a mummy with the blankets all tucked up tight around me with only my face looking out of the covers and with my hand under my cheek. It takes me quite some time to get comfortable and to get everything tucked in. When one part gets tucked then something else isn't tucked. It is a process to get it all coordinated and comfortable! But it is my favorite way to sleep when it is cold. And perhaps most will think I am a bit weird.

I can't imagine why other people choose to do some of the things that they do. I am sure that God can't imagine why we do some things either. He must want to just shake His head in wonderment at some of the things that I do. And might even want to attach the word weird to my name. If you think someone is a bit weird, then maybe you need to get to know them better, to be able to understand why they do what they do. God has given us the best way to do things. Just spend time in His Word and you will easily find the best way--His way! God does not do weird things. Some things He has told us can seem weird and seem hard to understand but if we understood why, they would not be weird! Spending time in His word is not weird either. It is a wise plan for 2023!

One more thing, we are in the Christmas season. The colors of the season are red, and green, and white and sparkly gold and silver. I think that perhaps the color red is fitting for the season. It is mentioned in a verse in Isaiah. Red must be God's favorite color since that is the color He gave blood when He created humanity. That blood red color was what the Passover angel saw when he passed over the Israelites as they prepared to leave the bondage of Egypt. And in that story lies the future story of the first Advent which we look forward to participating in each year. He did not come back in the way or for the reason that people expected. But He did come and is coming back again. He was rejected because He did not fit people's expectations. When He comes again, some will be surprised once again. But if we have studied His Word, He will fulfill our expectations in a grand and magnificent way! Nothing weird with that!
